What does Conch mean in Key West?
A Conch is a person born in Key West. Someone who moved here and has lived on the island seven years is called a Freshwater Conch. Someone born here is sometimes called a Saltwater Conch to make the distinction clear.
What does Cayo Hueso mean?
Cayo Hueso is the original Spanish name for the island and translates roughly to bone cay or bone island. Locals still use Bone Island affectionately.
Who are Key West's streets named after?
The four principal ones — Simonton, Whitehead, Fleming and Greene — carry the names of the island's early owners, who divided the town on William A. Whitehead's 1829 plat map. Duval and Eaton honor Florida's first two territorial governors, and Truman Avenue honors Harry S. Truman.
