A storied past in the heart of Old Town
Established in 1892, the Key West Public Library has long been a cornerstone of island life. First opened as the Monroe County Free Library, it has occupied its current historic building on Fleming Street since 1959. The site was once home to the Key West Fire Station and City Hall, and now serves as a gathering place where knowledge, art and local lore come together.
The library’s architecture reflects the classic beauty of Old Town Key West, with graceful arches, serene reading rooms, and tropical landscaping. Step inside and you’ll find more than just books—you’ll discover more than a century of island history.
