Key West keeps a few quiet rituals, and one of the best happens every evening just as the light goes gold. A little after seven o’clock, from the roof of the National Weather Service office on White Street, a white latex balloon rises off the island and climbs steadily into the dusk. If you happen to be looking up at the right moment — from a porch, a pool deck, a bike on a back lane — you might catch it: a small pale dot drifting higher and higher until it disappears. That balloon is not decoration. It is one of the oldest and most reliable pieces of weather science in the world, and Key West has been part of it for decades.
A balloon, an instrument, and a global appointment
Beneath the balloon hangs a radiosonde — a small, lightweight instrument package that measures temperature, humidity, and pressure, and uses GPS to track wind speed and direction as it rises. It transmits a fresh set of readings every second, painting a vertical profile of the atmosphere from the ground all the way up to the edge of space. The National Weather Service has been flying these instruments since the 1930s, and the basic idea has barely changed because it still works better than almost anything else for measuring the air above our heads.
What makes it remarkable is the choreography. Twice a day, at the same coordinated moment, more than 800 stations around the world release their balloons at once — a single synchronized snapshot of the entire planet’s atmosphere. The official observation times are midnight and noon in Greenwich, England (00 and 12 UTC), and each station launches about an hour beforehand so the data is ready on time. In Key West, that translates to roughly 7 p.m. in summer and 6 p.m. in winter, with a matching launch twelve hours later at dawn. Every evening, as Key West watches the sun drop toward the Gulf, a balloon goes up here at the same instant balloons go up in Tokyo, in Nairobi, in Reykjavik. It is one of the most quietly cooperative things human beings do.
How high, how cold, how far
The flight itself is more dramatic than its gentle start suggests. The balloon climbs at about 1,000 feet per minute, expanding as the air around it thins — from roughly five feet across at launch to more than twenty feet near the top. Somewhere above 100,000 feet the latex finally bursts, a small parachute deploys, and the radiosonde drifts back toward the earth and the sea. A single sounding can last well over an hour and a half and carry the instrument a hundred miles or more from where it started.
