Key West was the natural place to make that stand. In 1982, the Key West Business Guild — already four years old and the first organization of its kind in the country — proposed the island’s first Pride parade. Without permits, the celebration was limited to the sidewalk along Duval Street. So the marchers made the most of it. Fewer than fifty people turned out, including a few good-hearted straight neighbors, their dogs, and — as island lore has it — one parrot. Everyone was decked in beads, balloons, and boas, singing and chanting to the delight of the crowds along the way.

That first walk grew into “PrideFest Key West” in the 1990s. Monroe County embraced it for the entire Florida Keys the following year. The phrase, created by local artist J.T. Thompson, has since traveled the world on millions of free bumper stickers.
