Named for the large population of sea turtles that live around the island, the Dry Tortugas are a group of islands located about 67 miles from the end of the Keys. Concierge Cindy is happy to help plan a day trip excursion by ferry, boat or sea plane and even an overnight glamping adventure, if you’d like. It’s a Bucket List paradise for secluded, exotic beaches, birding, snorkeling and more. Plan your historic Fort Jefferson excursion for a glimpse into what life must have been like in the 1860s. For a time, almost 2000 people lived in this city by the sea. Lush by today’s standards, it was once regarded as a dark, mean place with lots of suffering, disease and death for the soldiers, workers and the families who tried to live there.

Experience has taught us that the best times to fly over are first thing in the morning and the last flight of the afternoon. You’ll beat the ferry over to the island and back at the end of the day. This means you’ll have a quieter time with less crowds during your visit. The small island has less land mass than Key West, so the weather is even better and air over a body of water is more stable which translates into less turbulence, too. Their planes are non-pressurized and fly so low scuba divers can dive in the morning and fly back in the afternoon. It really is a magical adventure by seaplane. The Dry Tortugas are in Central Time, so when you cross the time line about 45 miles west of Key West, you actually land 15 minutes before take off time!

For those who prefer to stick to their sea legs, the ferry is the way to go. The ferry is a high-speed, state-of-the-art catamaran with daily service to and from Key West.
