The Island's Most Famous Resident Sits Behind Glass

Robert is a handmade doll, made by the Steiff company in Germany around 1904 and given to a Key West boy named Robert Eugene Otto — Gene to everyone who knew him. The two were inseparable. When something in the house went wrong, Gene had an explanation ready: he did not do it, Robert did. The phrase outlived them both and is still heard on the island today.

Gene grew up to be a serious painter. The Otto family home at 534 Eaton Street, a Queen Anne with a turret and a wraparound veranda, is now known as the Artist House. After Gene died in 1974, the doll stayed on in the house with its next owner, Myrtle Reuter, who kept him for two decades and donated him to the Fort East Martello Museum in 1994. He has lived there ever since, in a glass case, in a sailor suit, receiving more mail than most people on this island.

One local custom holds: ask before you take his photograph. Longtime visitors will tell you the ones who skip that step tend to have a rough week.

A Fort, an Ice House, and the Buildings That Remember

Fort East Martello, built during the Civil War era and never finished as a working fortification, is the best-preserved example of Martello-style military architecture in the country. It failed spectacularly as a fort and succeeded beautifully as a museum, and it now anchors the island's ghost tourism, its folk art collection and, every October, the staging ground for the biggest bicycle ride in the Keys.

Closer to Duval, 428 Greene Street has worn more hats than any building in town. Constructed in 1852, it opened as an ice house that also served as the city morgue. In the 1890s it held a wireless telegraph station, and in 1898 the news that the battleship Maine had been destroyed in Havana harbor traveled to the world through that building. Later it was a cigar factory, then a bar. It is Captain Tony's Saloon now, and the tree growing through the roof is not a decorating choice.

This is the pattern across Old Town. The prettiest lanes have the longest memories, and the buildings rarely explain themselves. That is precisely the pleasure of walking them.

The Literary Haunts

Key West's other kind of haunting is a matter of public record. For most of a century, American writers came here to work, and many of the addresses are still standing on quiet residential streets.

•      Ernest Hemingway wrote through the 1930s at his Whitehead Street house, now a museum and a National Historic Landmark, still staffed by several dozen cats.

•      Elizabeth Bishop bought a nineteenth-century eyebrow house at 624 White Street in 1938 and spent some of her most productive years there. The house has since been restored and now serves as the headquarters of the Key West Literary Seminar.

•      Robert Frost wintered for sixteen consecutive seasons beginning in 1945 in a cottage behind Jessie Porter's home at 410 Caroline Street, today the Heritage House Museum and Robert Frost Cottage.

•      Tennessee Williams arrived in 1941 and later bought a clapboard Bahamian cottage on Duncan Street, adding a one-room writing studio he called the Mad House.

•      Shel Silverstein kept a Greek Revival house and writing studio on William Street.

•      The Windsor Lane compound near Solares Hill, a cluster of restored shacks and cottages, once wintered John Hersey, Richard Wilbur, John Ciardi and Ralph Ellison.

October on the Island: What Is Actually Happening

The island's biggest month runs on a fixed schedule, and the good homes go early.

•      Fantasy Fest, October 16 to 25, 2026. Ten days of costuming, street fairs, masquerade marches and parties across Old Town. The 2026 theme is Musical Icons and Iconic Musicals.

•      The Zombie Bike Ride, Sunday, October 18. Zombieland opens at Fort East Martello at 2 p.m. with body painting, food vendors and an expanded kids zone. The ride itself rolls out at 6 p.m., roughly four miles along the Atlantic shoreline and into town.

•      The Goombay Festival, opening weekend. Goatskin drums, Bahamian food and craft vendors along Petronia Street — the most family-friendly and most genuinely local corner of the whole festival.
