The colorful history of tropical Key West: Stay where the stories come alive

  • Modern-day Key West may be best known for its sunsets, festivals and laid-back island vibe, but beneath the swaying palms are stories as colorful as the pastel cottages lining
its streets. From wreckers and cigar makers to presidents and poets, our island has been shaped by generations of adventurers, dreamers and creators. And when you stay with Historic
Key West Vacation Rentals, you’re not just enjoying a comfortable getaway — you’re living inside that history. Each of our carefully restored homes tells a story of its own,
giving you the chance to step back in time while enjoying all the modern comforts of today.

    From wreckers to wealth

Spanish explorers first charted the island in the 1500s, and named it Cayo Hueso (Island of Bones) after finding a shore scattered with skeletal remains. Over time, the
name evolved into “Key West.” In the early 1800s, Bahamian settlers and New Englanders arrived, building the foundation of the island’s Conch culture. Key West soon became one of the wealthiest cities in America, thanks to “wrecking” — the salvaging of cargo from ships that struck the nearby reefs. Shipwreck treasures financed the construction of beautiful conch-style homes, many of which still stand in Old Town today. By the mid-1800s, Cuban immigrants brought the cigar industry, rolling millions of cigars annually and adding rich cultural traditions that remain woven into the city’s fabric. The island also became strategically important during the Civil War, serving as a Union stronghold. Today, Key West is celebrated for its unique Conch Republic spirit — a blend of history, creativity, resilience and independence. From pastel conch cottages and historic landmarks to lively festivals and a thriving arts scene, the island remains a living storybook of adventure and cultural fusion. Imagine strolling down a cobblestone lane or staying in a conch-style home that reflects those prosperous times.
